Fillings do exactly what their name suggests – they fill a hole in the tooth that has been caused by decay, playing an important role in helping us to keep a tooth for many more years.
Amalgam fillings are the traditional silver-coloured fillings we are all familiar with. Although there is mercury in dental amalgam, once it is combined with the other materials in the amalgam filling its chemical nature is changed rendering it harmless. No trustworthy controlled studies have found a connection between amalgam fillings and any medical problem.
White fillings are popular because they are matched with the colour of your teeth so are natural looking. The main disadvantage is their life expectancy. White fillings have always been considered less long lasting than silver amalgam fillings but there are now new materials available with properties comparable to silver amalgam, and these are very successful.
At Lansdown Dental Practice in Birmingham, we offer both amalgam and white fillings. Whilst white fillings are becoming more popular, amalgam fillings represent the most durable and long-lasting form available.
If you need a filling, we will discuss the options available to help you decide what is right for you.
